Day 23 March 26
Today I woke up at 6.02am to do daily routine. After that, I went to update my journal and blog since I had updated last few days ago. Next, I continued doing on my APPG mini project from what I left doing last night. At about 8.30am, I got prepared everything and headed to the classroom together with my group. As we were walking to the classroom, we were been asked by our group member, Shaoming whether we could have our breakfast before attending the lesson. So we decided to make our way to Canteen 1. When we reached, we saw some of our classmates were having their breakfast at the canteen. Then, my group and I went to order our food at different stalls. So I went to buy “You diao” and a drink of soya milk at the cost of $1 RMB together. After had taken our breakfast, we left our classmates and walked to the classroom. As we walked along the road side, my roommate and I took out a piece of tissue and started to sneeze. Then, one of my group member, Siew bo said that “What a coincidence”, we begun to laugh about it. Later, when we reached the classroom, I saw Mr Chua was sitting inside the room and gave him my morning greeting after I entered the room. As for today’s morning lesson, it was actually APPG. However, Mr Chua told us that Mr Ma couldn’t give us lecture in the morning as his legs were not feeling well and given some rest. So the lesson was replaced APPG with IS. Then, we were been told to do the assignments as soon as possible according to the instructions given by Mr Chua. As we were doing, the time flied very fast and it was about 11.30am. Then, after we had been released from the lesson, my group and I went to Canteen 1 for buying our food back to hostel. By the time when we reached the canteen, it was almost packed full by the local students here. And it was so squeezed when I tried to move from stall to stall. Then, finally I had reached the stall and ordered a packet of fried rice. The fried rice which I ordered was “Xiang Gu Nou Si Cai Fai”, the price was $4 RMB and I found it quite reasonable to buy it. While we were waiting for our orders to be ready, we saw more and more local students came to Canteen 1 and quickly went to the stall for ordering their food. After that, we left some of our classmates at the canteen and walked back to our hostel. When the moment, we reached the hostel, we quickly switched on our laptop and started to update our journal. While we were updating, we had our lunch at the same time. At about 1.30pm, we started to make a leave and walked down from our hostel to the classroom. Then, while we reached outside the classroom, I saw Mr Ma finally and he was giving us revision paper to do for theory test tomorrow. After had been trying on doing the revision paper, Mr Ma has finally given us the answers and started to think about the structure codes. At about 4.30pm, Mr Chua was suddenly came to the class and called out the leaders to have a look on barbeque pits at outside the school. Then, the leaders are Ben, WenHao, Dave and me went to pack our things and left the classroom to meet Mr Chua and Miss Lisa at ground level. After all of us had reached, Miss Lisa brought us to the location for the barbeque on this Sunday afternoon. As we walked towards the location, I found that the location wasn’t that far but it was just beside the school’s hotel. Next, we went inside and found that it was just a normal park except their barbeque pits were quite limited. Then, we also found out that there wasn’t much water hoses could be used after every barbeque event that held by the local students. After we went the area for one round, we finally made a stop and walked towards the hotel outside. From there, we could walk back to our hostel without spending more time on walking. Later, we reached the hostel and got myself changed for preparing to have my dinner at outside the school. At about 7pm, I decided to have dinner on my own at the usual place. After that, I got back to the hostel and continued on updating my journal in blog. As for today was nothing much to be observed but I had managed to have a view of the barbeque pits here and made a comparison between in Singapore and in China. As I was not sure about the size of the pits but I believed that the size was seem to be small according to the Miss Lisa and her colleague’s conversation with Mr Chua.

Day 24 March 27
This morning I woke up at 6.45am instead 6am because there was no morning lesson at 9am. From 9am to 12pm, my classmates and I would be going for a factory visit but I was not sure what kind of factory that we visited in the first place. After I got up from my bed, as usual I washed up and showered. Next, I went to have my breakfast and did my homework at the same time. At about 9.10am, most of us from my group went down to nearby canteen, Canteen 2 for having our breakfast together. By the time we reached there, we saw Mr Chua was sitting and had his breakfast at the stall outside. Then, we also had given our morning greeting to him before we went to buy our breakfast. After buying, we sat together with our lecturer and had our conversation. About 9.45am, we went out of the canteen and headed towards to the meeting point at Administration building outside. Then, I saw most of my classmates were not there yet. There were about 3-4 groups had reached the place. Later, I saw Mr Ma was on his way towards us. About 9.50am, the bus arrived and all of us were boarded into the bus with our tour lead for today, Miss Lisa. At 10.05am, the bus was about to set off to our destination. Before the bus was begun to set off, I saw the staffs were doing their workout at the outside of Administration building. Their workout was different from ours in Singapore. They were involved with a kind of “sword” or equipment while they were doing. As they did the workout, I found that their music for this event was a bit weird. Due to my hearing experience, the music was a kind of dance genre but rather than sentimental genre. After that, the bus was set off and the bus was kept horning while he drove very speedy. About 10-20 minutes had passed, we reached the place. However, we went to the wrong factory in the beginning after had verified with the staffs there. Then, the bus was moved backwards and went to another factory. At 10.23am, the second factory we reached was the correct venue for our visit. As the bus had reached, I found out that the factory was place to make the fibre cable, optical fibre and etc. So we were dropped off from the bus and waited for the staff-in-charge to lead us for the visit tour. At the same time, I had also seen the name of the company was Yangtze Optic Fibre & Cable Company. After the staff-in-charge had reached and met us, we were about to move inside the building and listened his instructions given as well as his introduction at the same time. The staff-in-charge was called Mr Qian as he was the lead for bringing us to have a visit in the factory. Later, when we were inside the building, the first place that we stepped in was the main arena. It was used to display the fibre cables, fibre material, drawing of the concept on making fibre and the history of the company. Then, we begun to gather with other groups which from other division of Ngee Ann. The first briefing we listened was the history of the company. The company was the second largest fibre making company and it was joined together with other 2 major parties from other countries. One of those two parties was from European country. And the other party was from China if I was not wrong. And it also provides fibre making for many companies. After had briefed on the history, we were proceed to another section on making the fibre cable. The process was taken 2-4 cycles in order to complete each process. The first cycle was shown on how the fibre cable was made. But it wasn’t pretty much to be explained and we proceed to second cycle. The second cycle was much detailed from the drawing shown. Mr Qian explained to us that before the second cycle was begun to process, the cable had to melt at very hot temperature, which was up to 2200 degree Celsius. The temperature was much hotter than any other materials melting. According to his explanation, we found that the quality and the thickness of each fibre glass could able to melt at certain hot temperature. So the specialists had to adjust the temperature up to 2200 degree Celsius so that the fibre glass would able to melt and formed into liquid. And the liquid form would bring tiny and thinness layer. The diameter of the thinness layer was about the same as our hair. I was quite amazed after got to know this kind of information given. At the same time, I had made an observation that normally the diameter of the fibre cable was normally larger than our hair’s but unexpectedly, it was much smaller and thinness. Next, we proceed to the display section where we saw most of the cable types were displayed in the container. And Mr Qian explained to us on how the cables were being used. After that, we went to inside of the building. The first section we stopped was the glass cleaning process. It was the place where the specialists could control the process and cleaned the fibre glass by the use of computerization. Next, after we had seen the first section, we walked to the second section. The second section was the heating process. The duration of heating process might take up to 4 hours to complete before began to form into liquid state. Next, we walked to the third section was the manufacturing process as well as production process. It was the place where the specialists were gathered up all the layers of the fibre and combined them into a cable form. And there were some of the towers doing on cable drawing process. According to the information given by Mr Qian, the height of each tower was about up to 30 metres tall, which about 5-10 storey levels building. We were only allowed to see its operation at its bottom part on ground level. And those towers would automatically transfer to a blank roll and continued without stopping its operation. Then, I found out that each roll of the cable length could grow up to 20km length long. Next, we walked to the last section for quality testing process and quality control process. According to Mr Qian’s explanation, there were 2 conditions to be involved in this process. The first condition was to test the cable tension with the force of 9 Newton. If the result didn’t meet the requirement, therefore it would treat as disqualified and discarded. And the other condition was to place a light source from end to end. If the light source was able to travel very smoothly without being distorted, then the qualification with requirements met would be given a passed by the specialist. Else, it would send back to specialist group for further testing. Then, I also saw there were quite a number of green files placed together with the materials. Those files were contained the customer’s request from different companies. Such as they provided making on the design according to the layout and properties given by the customer. After went through those process, I found that most of them was computerized by using computer control. The only work that specialists could be done was to inject materials such as germanium into the container and those computer would be done the work accordingly. Later, we went to have photo taking together with students from other division. After that, my group and I went to approach Miss Lisa for photo taking with us as well. At about 11.30am, we went out of the building and waited for the bus driver to be back for driving us back to our school. About 20 minutes later, the bus door had opened and we immediately boarded in. At 12.15pm, we have reached our school and dropped off at Administration building outside. Then, most of my group left from our classmates and went back to our hostel to do our homework. Until 1.50pm, my stomach was started to feel very hungry so I decided to go have lunch on my own. When I was on the way down, I walked towards to the nearby canteen, Canteen 2 for having a simple lunch. Then, I was ordered the usual dish, Curry Chicken Fried Rice from the stall at level 2 in the canteen. About 30 minutes to 2.15pm, I walked back to the hostel and continued on my revision for APPG theory test after had taken my lunch. About 3.40pm, most of us in our room’s hostel were ready and walked towards to the classroom for attending our first APPG theory test. By the time when we reached the classroom outside, we were immediately started our test and the duration for it was 1 hr 10 minutes. As I was doing the test, I had met some difficulties on reading the questions. Although the questions asked simple but sometimes could be very tricky. And I were almost got tricked from it before I started to lose my attention. After had finished the test, together with my group members, Shaoming and Siew bo, we went to Canteen 3 for buying our dinner. We decided to buy it and brought back to the hostel instead of having at the canteen. Then as usual, we did our homework on night time before we turned in to sleep. As for today, I had gained something that was worth to learn during my journey. According to my learning plan, I had achieved the objective which I wanted to know and learn from the industry visit. However, this visit had given me on knowing the cable structure and its operation. During the time I was in ITE, I didn’t have a chance given on knowing those technologies. I was only given the chance to learn through its fundamental and theory, and it was nothing much for me to explore more. I thanked that I had an opportunity to increase my learning from this visit.
